A mechanical nudge to a sluggish scalp

Fine PDO threads placed just under the scalp create a controlled micro-injury that increases local blood flow and collagen activity around the follicles. Support for hair density, not a lift and not a cure on its own.

Scalp Threads (Regenera / Thread Mesotherapy) — doctor-administered at the hospital

This is a different use of PDO threads to the facial thread lift on this site. There, threads catch and reposition sagging tissue. Here, on the scalp, there is nothing to lift — the threads are placed to sit under the skin and act as a physical stimulus, encouraging local circulation and a mild collagen response around the follicles they pass near. Some hospitals call this Regenera-style thread mesotherapy; the mechanism is mechanical stimulation, not volume or lift.

As with every hair treatment on this site, the sequence matters: hair loss is diagnosed first — pattern loss, telogen effluvium, a deficiency, thyroid disease — and that diagnosis decides the actual treatment plan. Scalp threads are an add-on procedure that supports a scalp already under medical management, not a way to skip that diagnosis or to talk yourself out of correcting an underlying deficiency.

The evidence base for scalp threads is smaller and newer than for PRP or GFC, and results are modest and gradual. It suits people who want an additional, low-downtime option alongside their medical treatment, not someone looking for a single fix for significant hair loss.

  • Run alongside, not instead of, your medical hair loss treatment.
  • Evidence for scalp threads is still limited relative to PRP — this is offered as an additional option, discussed honestly at consultation.

Dermatology at this hospital is self-pay. We do not have an insurance facility for skin — neither for aesthetic treatment, which no Indian health policy covers, nor for medical dermatology consultations and courses.

Technology

What is used

  • Absorbable PDO (polydioxanone) threads, fine gauge, placed superficially under the scalp
  • Placed to stimulate the area mechanically rather than to lift or reposition tissue
  • Threads dissolve over a period of months; the intended effect is the local response they trigger, not the thread remaining in place
  • Performed by Dr. Neha Shukla, MD Dermatology, as part of a wider treatment plan

Suitability

Who this suits

Scalp threads are an adjunct. They are only offered once the cause of your hair loss has been established and a medical plan is in place — a deficiency or thyroid problem left uncorrected will outweigh anything threads can do.

  • Pattern hair loss already under medical treatment, looking for an additional supportive option
  • Thinning where the scalp's circulation and general condition seem sluggish rather than the hairline having receded significantly
  • People who want a needle-based option but are not ready for, or are combining this with, PRP or GFC
  • Not a substitute for diagnosing and treating telogen effluvium, deficiency or thyroid-driven hair loss
  • Not suitable with scalp infection, active dermatitis, keloid tendency, or clotting disorders

The process

How a session runs

  1. Confirm the diagnosis and plan

    Before the first session

If you have not already been assessed for the cause of your hair loss here, that comes first. Threads are added to an existing medical plan, not used instead of one.

  2. Numbing

Topical or local anaesthetic across the treatment area of the scalp.

  3. Thread placement

    About 30–45 minutes

Fine PDO threads are introduced under the scalp in a grid or pattern across the thinning area using a fine needle or cannula. You feel pressure rather than sharp pain.

  4. The following days

Mild tenderness, small bumps at entry points and slight swelling for a couple of days, settling within the week.

  5. Course and review

    Typically every 4–6 weeks

Usually run as a short course alongside ongoing medical treatment, with progress judged on photographs at three and six months rather than day to day.

Aftercare

After a session

  • No hair wash for 24 hours
  • No colouring, styling chemicals or tight hairstyles for a few days
  • No vigorous scalp massage for a week
  • No gym, sauna or steam for 24 hours
  • Mild tenderness and small bumps at entry points are normal and settle within days

Questions

What people ask us

In English and ગુજરાતી, because the decision gets made in whichever one you think in.

Is this the same as the thread lift for the face?શું આ ચહેરાના થ્રેડ લિફ્ટ જેવું જ છે?

No. The facial thread lift repositions sagging tissue. Scalp threads are not intended to lift anything — they sit under the scalp purely to act as a mechanical stimulus to local blood flow and collagen activity around the follicles.

Will this fix my hair loss on its own?

No. It is an adjunct to a medical plan, not a replacement for one. If your hair loss is driven by a deficiency, thyroid disease or untreated pattern loss, that has to be addressed directly — threads support a scalp already being treated.

How is this different from PRP or GFC?

PRP and GFC inject your own blood-derived growth factors into the scalp. Scalp threads work purely mechanically — a physical stimulus rather than a biological one. Some patients combine the two; which makes sense for you is a consultation discussion.

How much evidence is there for this?

Less than for PRP, which has a longer track record in pattern hair loss. It is offered here as a reasonable additional option for people already under medical treatment, not presented as proven superior to better-established treatments.

Does it hurt?

The scalp is numbed first, so placement is pressure and pulling rather than sharp pain. Expect some tenderness and small bumps at the entry points for a few days afterwards.
