Diabetic retinopathy is silent until it is advanced. That is exactly why the annual dilated eye check exists — and why it is the most valuable half hour a person with diabetes spends each year.
Retina & Diabetic Eye Care at the hospital
The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Diabetes damages the small blood vessels that feed it — slowly, quietly, and without symptoms until the damage is well established. By the time vision blurs, treatment is about protecting what remains rather than restoring what was lost.
This is the single strongest argument for annual screening. If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, a dilated retinal examination once a year — more often if changes are already present — catches retinopathy at the stage where it can still be controlled.
Beyond diabetes, the retina service covers the conditions that need urgent attention: sudden floaters or flashes, a curtain across the vision, and age-related macular changes.
Cashless insurance
A photo of your policy card on WhatsApp is enough. We check whether it is one we can settle cashless, what waiting period and lens sub-limit apply, and give you your actual figure before you commit to a date.
Cashless here runs through IFFCO Tokio and covers eye surgery. Other insurers are reimbursement claims, which we help you file.

The process
Your diabetes control, duration and medication matter as much as the eye examination itself — they shape how often you need to be seen.
The pupil is widened with drops so the whole retina can be examined, not just the centre. Vision stays blurred and light-sensitive for a few hours afterwards, so bring sunglasses and do not plan to drive yourself home.
Retinal photography or scans to document the current state, so next year's examination is a comparison rather than a fresh start.
Either laser treatment or referral where the retina needs intervention, or a specific review interval — six months, twelve months — rather than a vague 'come back sometime'.

Questions
In English and ગુજરાતી, because the decision gets made in whichever one you think in.
Yes, and that is precisely the point. Diabetic retinopathy causes no symptoms in its early and most treatable stages. An annual dilated examination is the only way to find it while it can still be controlled.
Once a year if your retina is normal and your sugars are reasonably controlled. More often — every three to six months — if changes are already present or your control has been poor.
Yes, a proper retinal examination requires dilation. Your vision will be blurred and light-sensitive for three to five hours afterwards, so please arrange for someone to drive you, and bring sunglasses.
Generally no. Treatment stabilises the retina and prevents further loss. That asymmetry — cheap to prevent, impossible to reverse — is the whole case for screening.
