The operation takes about twenty minutes. Choosing the lens, understanding the cost and confirming your insurance is the part that deserves time — so we explain all three before you decide anything.
The hospital's own operating theatre, Sargasan
A cataract is the natural lens of the eye turning cloudy. It happens gradually, usually after sixty, and it is the single most common reason vision fades with age. Glasses stop helping. Headlights glare at night. Colours look washed out. Reading needs more and more light.
The treatment is to remove the clouded lens and replace it with a clear artificial one — an intraocular lens, or IOL. It is a day procedure. You walk in, and you walk out the same day with the eye protected by a shield.
Most families arrive with the same three questions, in the same order: what will it cost, does our insurance cover it, and which lens should we choose. This page answers all three, and Dr. Chaitanya Shukla goes through them again with you in person before anything is booked.
What it costs
Nearly all of the difference in cataract surgery cost is the lens. The surgery itself, the theatre and the follow-up are the same whichever lens you choose. Here is what each type actually does for you.
| Lens option | What it does | Cost per eye |
|---|---|---|
| Monofocal IOL | Sets your eye for one distance — usually far. Excellent, sharp distance vision; reading glasses still needed. The lens most cataract surgery is done with, and the one most insurance policies cover in full. | On request — ask on WhatsApp |
| Toric IOL | A monofocal lens that also corrects astigmatism. Worth it if you have significant cylindrical power — without it, astigmatism remains after surgery. | On request — ask on WhatsApp |
| EDOF (extended depth of focus) IOL | Stretches focus across a range rather than fixing one point. Good distance and intermediate vision — dashboard, computer, faces — with reading glasses for fine print. | On request — ask on WhatsApp |
| Multifocal / Trifocal IOL | Aims for spectacle independence across distance, intermediate and near. The trade-off is haloes around lights at night, which most people adapt to. Not suitable for every eye. | On request — ask on WhatsApp |
For context on the wider Gandhinagar market: Google's own AI summary for cataract treatment in Gandhinagar quotes ₹15,000 to ₹1,00,000 per eye depending on the lens. Our fees sit inside that range; the exact figure depends on your lens choice and your insurance.Source: Google AI Overview, captured 19 July 2026
Cashless insurance
A photo of your policy card on WhatsApp is enough. We check whether it is one we can settle cashless, what waiting period and lens sub-limit apply, and give you your actual figure before you commit to a date.
Cashless here runs through IFFCO Tokio and covers eye surgery. Other insurers are reimbursement claims, which we help you file.
What to send
Suitability
A cataract does not have to be 'ripe' before it can be removed — modern surgery is done as soon as the cloudiness interferes with how you live.
The process
Four visits, spread over about three weeks. Only one of them is the surgery.
A full eye examination, cataract grading, and biometry — the measurement that determines your lens power. Dr. Chaitanya then talks through which lens types suit your eye and how you actually use your vision: driving at night, reading, screen work, temple, kitchen.
We check your policy against our empanelled insurers and TPAs and start the cashless pre-authorisation. Routine blood work and a physician's fitness note are arranged in parallel.
Anaesthetic drops, not an injection or general anaesthesia. You are awake and comfortable throughout. The clouded lens is removed by phacoemulsification through a small incision and the new lens is placed. You rest, you are reviewed, and you go home the same day with a shield over the eye.
The shield comes off and the eye is checked. Most people can see clearly enough to move around the house comfortably by this visit, though vision continues to settle for a few weeks.
Drops on a tapering schedule, avoid dust, water and rubbing the eye. Review at one week and one month. If the second eye also needs surgery, it is usually scheduled a week or two after the first.

Questions
In English and ગુજરાતી, because the decision gets made in whichever one you think in.
No. The eye is numbed with drops, so you feel pressure and see light and movement, but not pain. There is no injection and no general anaesthesia for a routine cataract.
About twenty minutes in theatre. With preparation and rest afterwards, plan on being at the hospital for roughly half a day. You go home the same day.
Cataract surgery is covered by almost every health policy in India, usually after an initial waiting period, and is one of the most common cashless claims. Cashless settlement here runs through IFFCO Tokio; if your policy is with another insurer the surgery still goes ahead, as a reimbursement claim we help you file. Send us a photo of your policy card on WhatsApp and we will tell you which of the two you are in before you commit to a date.
It depends far more on how you use your eyes than on price. If you drive at night a great deal, a multifocal lens may not suit you. If you read for hours without glasses, that changes the answer again. Dr. Chaitanya will make a specific recommendation for your eye after biometry — not a menu.
No. If both eyes have cataracts, they are operated separately — typically one to two weeks apart — so the first eye is settled and safe before the second is done.
Light activity and desk work within a few days. Driving once Dr. Chaitanya clears you at the one-week review. Heavy lifting, swimming and dusty work wait about two weeks.
