Tattoo removal — a course, not a single zap

Q-switched laser breaks tattoo ink into fragments your body clears over weeks between sessions. It takes multiple sessions, some colours respond far better than others, and complete removal is not guaranteed for every tattoo.

Tattoo Removal — doctor-administered at the hospital

Laser tattoo removal works by delivering very short, high-energy pulses that shatter ink particles in the skin into pieces small enough for the immune system to clear away, gradually, between sessions. Nothing happens instantly — each session fades the tattoo a little further, and the interval between sessions is where the actual clearance happens.

How well a tattoo responds depends heavily on its ink. Black and dark blue respond best. Green, yellow and light or pastel inks respond far more slowly and sometimes incompletely, whatever laser is used. Amateur tattoos with less densely packed ink usually clear faster than professional ones. Older tattoos, tattoos with layered colours, and tattoos done with unknown or mixed inks are all less predictable.

The honest starting point of any consultation is looking at your specific tattoo — its colours, density, age and location — and giving a realistic session estimate and outcome, rather than a blanket promise. Some tattoos fade to a faint shadow rather than disappearing entirely, and that possibility is discussed before you start, not after several sessions in.

Packages & pricing

Session packages

Priced per session by tattoo size, because the total number of sessions varies too much by ink and colour to sell as a fixed-price package upfront.

Medium tattooPer sessionOn request — ask on WhatsApp
Large tattooPer sessionOn request — ask on WhatsApp
Multi-colour tattoo — additional wavelength passPer sessionOn request — ask on WhatsApp
  • Sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart, longer on darker skin, to give the body time to clear fragmented ink between visits.
  • The total number of sessions is estimated at consultation from your specific tattoo and revisited as it responds — some tattoos need considerably more sessions than others.

Dermatology at this hospital is self-pay. We do not have an insurance facility for skin — neither for aesthetic treatment, which no Indian health policy covers, nor for medical dermatology consultations and courses.

Technology

The laser and why Indian skin needs a cautious approach

Q-switched lasers are picky about skin tone — too much energy on darker skin risks burns and, more often, leaves the treated area lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, sometimes for months.

  • Q-switched laser with multiple wavelengths, selected to target specific ink colours
  • Fluence set conservatively for your skin type, with a test patch before a full first session on darker or previously untreated skin
  • Longer intervals between sessions on darker skin tones, to allow full recovery and reduce pigment risk
  • Attention paid throughout to any change in the surrounding, untattooed skin, not just the ink itself
  • Performed under the supervision of Dr. Neha Shukla, MD Dermatology

Suitability

What determines how well a tattoo removes

This is assessed tattoo by tattoo, not given as a general rule — but these are the factors that consistently matter.

  • Ink colour — black and dark blue clear fastest; green, yellow and pastel shades are slow and sometimes incomplete
  • Tattoo age — older tattoos have often already begun to fade and can respond faster
  • Density and layering — amateur, sparse tattoos generally clear faster than dense professional work or cover-ups
  • Location — tattoos closer to the heart (upper body) tend to clear faster than those on the hands or feet
  • Skin tone — darker skin needs more conservative settings and a longer course to avoid pigment change
  • Not suitable during pregnancy, over active skin infection, or immediately after recent sun exposure to the area

The process

The course, session by session

  1. Assessment

The tattoo's colours, density, age and location are examined, and a realistic session estimate and expected outcome are discussed — including the possibility of incomplete fading for difficult colours.

  2. Test patch

A small area is treated first on darker skin or unfamiliar ink, to check the skin's response before committing to the full tattoo.

  3. Each session

    10–30 minutes, by size

The laser is passed across the tattoo. Sensation is a sharp snapping, more intense than laser hair reduction; numbing cream is offered.

  4. Immediately after

The area frosts white for a few minutes, then becomes red and swollen, sometimes with pinpoint bleeding or blistering over the following day or two.

  5. Between sessions

    6–8 weeks

Fading continues gradually as the body clears fragmented ink. Progress is photographed at each visit before deciding on the next session.

Aftercare

After each session

  • Keep the area clean and covered for the first few days; a blister or scab may form and should be left alone
  • No picking at scabs or blisters — that is how scarring happens, not the laser itself
  • Sunscreen on the area once healed, for the whole course and beyond
  • No swimming, gym or soaking the area until it has fully healed
  • Some temporary lightening or darkening of the treated skin is common and usually settles between sessions

Questions

What people ask us

In English and ગુજરાતી, because the decision gets made in whichever one you think in.

How many sessions will I need?કેટલી સિટિંગ્સ જોઈશે?

It varies enormously by colour, density and age of the tattoo — anywhere from around six sessions for a simple black amateur tattoo to considerably more for dense, multi-coloured professional work. You will get an honest estimate for your specific tattoo, not a generic number.

Will my tattoo disappear completely?

Often, but not always. Black ink on the right skin type usually clears very well. Green, yellow and pastel inks, and some cover-up tattoos, sometimes fade to a faint shadow rather than vanishing entirely. That possibility is discussed before you start.

Does it hurt more than getting the tattoo?

Most people describe each pulse as a sharper, hotter snap than the tattoo needle. Numbing cream is offered and helps considerably, particularly for larger areas.

Can it leave a scar or change my skin colour?

Scarring is uncommon when the area is cared for properly between sessions and scabs are left alone. Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin is more common, particularly on darker skin tones, and usually fades — which is why sessions are spaced further apart on darker skin.

Can all tattoo colours be removed?

Black responds best. Blues and reds generally respond well too. Greens, yellows and pastel or white ink are the hardest to clear and sometimes only partially fade, regardless of the laser used.
